The fourth- and fifth-graders of Lord Baltimore were treated to a special presentation on April 17, of “Tar Wars” a nationwide program that started in Colorado, designed to educate America’s youth about the dangers of smoking.

Jill Collins, first-grade teacher, was recently named Teacher of the Year at Phillip C. Showell Elementary School in Selbyville.

Mike Lingenfelter, sixth-grade math teacher at Selbyville Middle School, was recently named Teacher of the Year at SMS. In order to win, a teacher must be nominated by either students, parents or a fellow teacher. Through the nomination and observation, a committee picks the winner.

A new Rite Aid store in Selbyville is on track for a 2010 opening near the intersection of Route 113 and Cemetery Road, with the unanimous approval of a preliminary site plan by town council members at their April 7 meeting.

St. Martins in the Field Episcopal Church in Selbyville will hold its first annual Book Fair on Saturday, April 19, at the parish hall from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

It was an aspiration held by many men of his generation. Gary Taylor thought for sure he would play professional baseball as an adult. Baseball was the main thing on his mind as a boy. And he was actually scouted by the Cleveland Indians — but an automobile accident when he was 15 years old abruptly ended those plans.

Selbyville will be losing one familiar face at town hall with the retirement of 10-year Town Administrator Gary Taylor, but they’ll be gaining a familiar face to fill the role: Robert Dickerson, a 35-year veteran of management at the town’s Baltimore Trust bank branch.

Charles O. Fitze Jr., 86, of Selbyville, Del., formerly of Baltimore, Md., passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008, at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, Md. He had been a supervisor for Church Hill Distributors for many years.

Fred W. Kahler Jr., 47, of Selbyville, Del., passed away Saturday, March 8, 2008, from complications of open heart surgery at PRMC in Salisbury, Md. He moved to Delaware in 1997, when he transferred to work with Verizon in Ocean View, Del. He loved spending time with his daughter Jordan, his family and friends, riding his Harley, boating, sunsets and NASCAR.

Elizabeth S. “Betty” Madara, 94, of Selbyville, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Berlin Nursing & Rehab Center, Berlin, Md. She wrote for many years for the Delmarva News and Wave newspapers. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Selbyville and had sung in the choir for 40 years. She was a member of the Golden Age Luncheon Group and the Friendship Circle at Salem.

Carol D. Roberson, 66, of Selbyville, Del., formerly of Bowie, Md., passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at her home. She owned and operated Video 1 in Ocean Pines and Ocean City for more than 10 years and had worked for Freestate Volkswagen in Marlow Heights, Md., for a number of years. She was a member of the Bowie Colts Corral #31.

The Delaware State Police recently charged a 31-year-old Selbyville woman with the production of counterfeit money.

Troop 4 detectives identified Jennifer Balascio as the suspect during their investigation. Investigators said they learned that Balascio possessed counterfeit denominations of $5, $10 and $20 bills, as well as forgery devices used to produce counterfeit money.

This past Saturday, as part of Kid’s Art Month in Selbyville, winners of the Kids’ Art Show could see their work proudly displayed at the Selbyville Public Library. And residents and visitors alike will be able to enjoy the pieces in storefronts across town until almost Easter.

Charles O. Fitze Jr., 86, of Selbyville, Del., formerly of Baltimore, Md., passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008, at Atlantic General Hospital, Berlin, Md. He had been a supervisor for Church Hill Distributors for many years.

A segment of Roxana Road (Route 17) that had been closed for several weeks was re-opened Tuesday, March 4, around noon. The road had been closed for removal and replacement of failed crossroad pipes by Department of Transportation (DelDOT) crews.

Lois J. Tucker, 71, of Selbyville, Del., formerly of Columbia, Md., passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at the Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, Md. She was a high school physical education teacher and also a cheerleading coach at Bowie High School for Prince George’s County, retiring in 1996 after 36 years of service.

Curtis William Mumford, 61, of Bishopville, Md., passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008. After graduating from the University of Baltimore with a degree in accounting, he opened a CPA office in Selbyville, Del. He truly loved his work as a CPA and was active in the business for 40 years, serving clients in Maryland and Delaware.

Edward J. Chiasson, 68, of Selbyville, Del., passed away Friday, Feb. 22, 2008, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake, Salisbury, Md. He owned and was the operator of Sea-Lites in Selbyville since 1993.

Tanya Shelton-Council has been the director of the Selbyville Public Library for just under a year, but she has big plans for the future — and, mainly, that consists of better serving her customers.

In honor of February’s designation as Black History Month, the Selbyville Public Library, located on the corner of Main and McCabe streets in downtown Selbyville, will be hosting “George Washington Carver: An Interpretative, Interactive Telling of the Legacy.” Willis Phelps Jr. of the Delaware Humanities Forum Speaker’s Bureau will present the program on Monday, Feb. 25, at 6:30 p.m.

Sub-.500 seasons were likely the last things that Selbyville Middle School athletes were expecting when their football team went 3-3-1 and their boys’ basketball team fell 3-9 on the season during the 2006-2007 school year.

Selbyville Town Council members voted on Monday to keep the town’s property tax rate unchanged again in the 2009 fiscal year, at $1.85 per $100 of assessed value. The rate has remained at that level for more than 15 years.
