Weekend events still rolling along

We wrote in this space last week that Labor Day weekend is no longer the definitive end to the season here.

Are you ready for some football?

When Brett Favre and his balky ankle take the field Thursday night with his Minnesota Vikings to take on Drew Brees and his defending champion New Orleans Saints, it will mark the official beginning of the 2010 NFL season.

Sea Pines president speaks out against BoA
Editor:

While it is encouraging to see Sussex County start evaluating the current Board of Adjustment (BoA) operations with a workshop, even though it was devoid of public comment opportunity (“County looks at process,” Coastal Point, Aug. 20, 2010), it is still a “baby step” toward rectifying a flawed governmental agency.

Holiday is not the end of area

Traditionally, the common conception of this area has been one that thrived from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and then we rolled up the sidewalks and counted the days until the visitors came back next year.

Millville closer to streetscape

To many who visit the area, Millville is that little town on Route 26 that has some grocery stores, several banks and an enormous liquor store. It appears to be based solely on the retail of Route 26, just like many people from other areas consider Selbyville and Dagsboro to be towns that exist only along Route 113.

Too late now for any control

I woke up the other night staring straight into the face of a pug.

Frankford resident questions policies

Favre better than many others

When word starting circulating on Tuesday that NFL quarterback Brett Favre was on an airplane heading from Mississippi to Minnesota, there was a collective groan from sports writers across these fruited plains.

Local laws apply to all of us

It seems this summer that we’ve had more complaints about the enforcement of parking regulations in Bethany Beach than at any other time. Two different people who contacted us suggested that the town specifically targets out-of-state license plates when writing tickets for expired meters or other parking infractions.

Just not true.

Pulling for the girls from Guam

There are so many things to enjoy over at the Senior League Softball World Series in Roxana this week.

Jazz Funeral a sight to see

Though summer is still in full swing, the realities of Labor Day weekend are fast approaching.

Great family week ahead for area

We love to consider this area the “family beaches” of the Delmarva coast.

World Series is now upon us

Play ball!

And with that short but sweet command, girls from around the world will set forth on a shared quest to claim the title of “world champion.”

Hocker family thankful for help with events

Crime hits even our little home

The Delaware State Police reported earlier this week that there are additional charges facing the five teenagers arrested last week in connection with the July 16 burglary of a Bethany Beach home. The police state that these charges stem from nine cases in Dover, Camden, Frederica and Magnolia, and involved the theft of such items as vehicles, satellite radios, watches and more.

Catching up with a true icon

As a child, there were a few objects that all I had to do was see them and I would get excited.

Fall elections now taking shape

It was beginning to look as if there would be very little excitement locally in the November elections. True, Ocean View Town Council Member Perry Mitchell announced his intent to run for Sen. George H. Bunting’s state senate seat in the Democratic primary, but there appeared to be very little intrigue for other available positions.

But now there’s a little spice.

Warming up to summer season

I confess. I’m one of those people who gets easily frustrated in the summer.

Do we every truly learn from history?
Editor:

What can federal employees and retirees learn from history? Today, it appears that we just sit back and expect everything to be given to us. Uncle Sam won’t let us down.

Ocean View the site of harmony?

Ocean View Town Council met Tuesday night for a public hearing regarding its 2010 comprehensive land-use plan. A touchy subject, to be sure, particularly regarding the increase in commercial lots compared to the past.

A tough week for the spineless

It ain’t easy being an invertebrate these days.

It’s not Economics 101 we’re talking about
Editor:

That most basic law of economics – supply and demand – that when something is plentiful, the price goes down and when that something is scare, the price goes up, is either not understood or simply ignored by the people who made the change to the Bethany Beach parking permit policy this year.

Hands-free law could save laws

Can you hear us now?
Starting Jan. 2, 2011, motorists on Delaware roads will need to use hands-free technology to talk on their cell phones. The new law, signed by Gov. Jack Markell on Tuesday, also bans drivers from texting, reading or writing messages, browsing the Internet, using laptops, PDAs or playing games.
