Central students have success at state fair

The Sussex Central High School Future Farmers of America chapter recently completed a successful week at the Delaware State Fair.

Sussex Central students captured four first-place medals, four second-place medals and eight third-place medals at the fair. Overall, the school earned 12 Top 10 medals.

The Ag Mechanics team, consisting of Robert Givens, Mark Skidmore, Lori Hughes and Paige McCandless, placed first in the state and will represent Delaware at the national competition in Indianapolis on Oct. 21-25. The coach was Sussex Central High School teacher Will Currey.

“What an incredible week for Sussex Central High School. The enthusiasm and pride of these students was exemplary,” Principal David Doherty said. “Their efforts are a true example of the spirit of Sussex Central High School. The entire community should share my pride in these students and staff.”

Sussex Central FFA students also worked in the Farm Bureau food booth, the FFA barnyard and the Delaware State grange hall. They also had breakfast with Gov. Ruth Ann Minner and participated in the annual FFA games.

Student participants were Robert Givens, Lori Hughes, Paige McCandless, Mark Skidmore, Matt Skidmore, Garth Huffman, Tabby Walton, Melissa Krick, Stephanie Austin, Megan Jenny, Adam Martin, Nicole Zehner, Sarah Zehner, Mary Zehner, Laura Nygard, Casey Lewis, Jessica Stewart, Ashley Hopkins, Maryann Arterbridge, Paige Valley and Kim Hall. Staff leadership was provided by teachers Will Currey, Cliff Lawson, Kara Kochis and Ralph Lowe.
