The Circle goes WiFi

The town of Georgetown, in cooperation with Sussex County, announced this week that free wireless Internet access is available to people at its historic town circle.

“We noticed a lot of people out there on nice days, and we wanted to have this service to offer them,” said Gene Dvornick, town manager.

For those people already accustomed to using WiFi, the Circle will merely be one more hot spot where they can check e-mail, surf the Internet or even file documents.

For those not so technically savvy, this means is that people with laptop computers can set them up in the vicinity of The Circle, and through the various antennas and computer equipment that the town and the county have set up, a signal is being broadcast and they can pick it up on their laptop, and hook into wireless Internet — void of any cables, modems or visible routers —without paying a dime.

“It’s a good public service offering,” said Eddie Sparpaglione, Sussex County information systems director. “In the environment of The Circle, it’s nice to be able to sit out there on your lunch break, and we don’t really have a Starbucks or any other free service provider around here for people.”

Sparpaglione said it is an extension of the wireless service they already provide within the county administrative building. He said a service such as this is necessary in this age of ever-present technology.

“In the connected world we live in, it’s almost a rarity for a building to not provide a wireless network service. This is another opportunity for citizens and visitors alike to take advantage of a convenient service at no expense to the public,” he said.

Users must have a WiFi compatible computer and agree to the service’s terms of use. The service will show up on a wireless computer as “The-Circle.”
