Dwight T. Schenk, 88, of Bethany Beach, Del., passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and spent his 30-year civilian government career with TECOM (Test and Evaluation Command) at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. After retiring, he and his wife spent 25 years traveling. As a tour director, he led caravans of motor homes through Mexico, Central America to Panama and as far north as Alaska. He owned and operated Lake Forest Campground in Deed Creek Lake, Md., for 20 years and founded the Maryland Association of Campgrounds.
Schenk is survived by his wife of 68 years, Velma B. Schenk; four daughters, Carole Lindes and Donna Wade of Bethany Beach, Ellie Garrison of Aberdeen, Md. and Vickie Frazier of Ocean City, Md. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and his brother, John Schenk of Aberdeen.
A memorial service at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Oakland, Md. is being planned. The family suggests that donations in his memory may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 31038 Country Garden Blvd., Dagsboro, DE 19939.
