The Delaware State Police and Department of Transportation reopened Route 1 between Dewey Beach and Fred Hudson Road/Road 360 north of Bethany Beach and the Indian River Inlet Bridge late Tuesday afternoon, following a detailed inspection of the inlet and surrounding roadways. Remaining closed Tuesday, due to high water, were: Fred Hudson Road in the area of Route 1 and Old Mill Road in Millville, as well as several other roads in the Lewes, Slaughter Beach and Oak Orchard areas.

With more than 80 students representing Indian River High School in the National Honor Society (NHS), Monday’s induction ceremony proved that one school can never have too much perfection. In all, 38 new NHS members made their way across the stage in last Tuesday’s presentation to join the John M. Clayton Chapter of the society.

The fourth- and fifth-graders of Lord Baltimore were treated to a special presentation on April 17, of “Tar Wars” a nationwide program that started in Colorado, designed to educate America’s youth about the dangers of smoking.

After 28 years of teaching — four at the high-school level and 24 in a Lutheran school, teaching 3- to 5-year-olds in the Springfield, Va., and Washington, D.C., area — Dorothy Fisch was ready for retirement… or at least semi-retirement.

Kim Kleinstuber, a fourth-grade teacher at Frankford Elementary School, was recently picked as the school’s Teacher of the Year. In order to win the honor, a teacher must be nominated by a student, parent or fellow teacher.

Thanks to a Melody Program grant award from the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, third-graders at Frankford Elementary School received instruments earlier this year that have enabled them to start a mariachi band.

Frankford Town Council and Planning Commission members came together on April 17 to continue work on the town’s comprehensive plan update, which has been on hold since December. However, the bulk of Tuesday’s meeting focused not on the town’s current and future limits and plans but instead on how that future might be impacted by a proposed large-scale revamp of U.S. Route 113.

Existing standards for public roads in Sussex County are admittedly less stringent than those imposed by the State of Delaware, but that could cease to be the case under a directive passed by the Sussex County Council at their Tuesday, Jan. 8, meeting.

The Sussex County Council on Jan. 8 granted unanimous approval of a conditional use for PMP Associates, which plans to bring a facility for healthcare and medical offices to a location near the intersection of Routes 54 and 20.

Frankford’s new water plant is in transition and on target for its final phase of development, officials reported at their Sept. 10 town council meeting. The project is earmarked for completion by January of 2008.

The owner of Frankford motorcycle repair business was arrested on two felony theft charges last week after a Delaware State Police investigation revealed that he had taken money for services and parts but never provided them, according to state police.

The opening day of the Bethany Beach Farmers’ Market was just peachy for the local farmers, farm families and food producers who came out to sell their produces directly to the public on Sunday, July 1.

The 25-member working group made up of civic leaders coming Millsboro south to Selbyville have officially recommended building a highway that will bypass U.S. 113 from north of Millsboro to south of Frankford.

On May 29, Waste Management collected their cans and made way for Frankford’s new trash service — Moor Disposal.
